Founded in 2014, the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) is a central cornerstone of SZU’s reform and innovation, covering undergraduate and graduate education with a focus on interdisciplinary teaching and research. IAS strives for excellence in teaching, research, and management. It aims to educate future scientific leaders through a distinctive academic atmosphere and environment.

IAS has established collaboration with renowned overseas universities to draw on the best practices of management from famous research universities at home and abroad. The Institute offers four undergraduate programs in Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biological Science, three master’s degree programs in Materials Science and Engineering, Complex Systems and Data Science, and Health and Environmental Sciences and one doctoral program in Municipal Environment and Public Health. The Innovation Class in Science and Engineering uniquely offers small class with courses delivered in Chinese and English, and assigns tutors to each student. Additionally, IAS provides students with a wide range of global learning opportunities. Currently, IAS has an undergraduate enrollment of 60 students and a graduate enrollment of 20-60 students. The number of students admitted to our graduate programs will continue to grow in the future.

Since the founding of the Institute, IAS has recruited experienced professors with global vision and young scholars with great potential. They continue their own research while teaching at IAS. At present, IAS has more than 40 full-time professors, over 30 research fellows and more than 90 postdoctoral fellows from around the world. All faculty members hold PhD degrees and all professors have overseas work or study experience. IAS boasts international academicians, Changjiang Distinguished Scholars and fellows of the International Professional Society and other renowned institutions. The IAS faculty have undertaken hundreds of projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Natural Science Foundation of Guangdong Province, Science Technology and Innovation Commission of Shenzhen Municipality, Shenzhen Overseas High Level Talent Project and Guangdong Pearl River Talent Program, and published hundreds of high-level academic papers in top journals.

IAS will continue to foster innovation and creativity and support cutting-edge scientific research across disciplines in marine resources and environment, functional materials, biotechnology, food science, and financial mathematics, educating socially conscious, dedicated and diligent scientific scholars to promote the development of hi-tech industry in Shenzhen, especially strategic emerging industries such as biology, new energy, new materials, and new generation information and communication technology and contributing to social and economic transformation of Shenzhen.
