The College of Computer Science and Software Engineering was founded in 2008. Its predecessor was the computer science teaching and research division of the Department of Electronic Engineering (1983) and the College of Software Engineering (2006). The first Dean of the College is Professor Guoliang Chen, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and National Distinguished Teacher of Higher Education.

Since the founding of the College, the discipline of Computer Science has become one of the leading disciplines nationally and globally. The College’s Computer Science and Engineering ranked 51-75 worldwide and 13-22 in China according to ShanghaiRanking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2020. Computer Science ranked 68th worldwide, 17th in China and 1st in Guangdong Province according to 2020 Best Global Universities Rankings, and 12th in China according to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2020 by subject. In addition, our computer major ranked 6th in China and 1st in Guangdong Province according to the 2019 Universities Ranking of China released by CUAA.

The College boasts excellent facilities, including the National Engineering Laboratory for Big Data System Computing Technology, 11 provincial-level platforms such as the Guangdong Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Economy (Shenzhen), five municipal-level platforms and two national experimental demonstration centers (Computer Experimental Teaching Center and Virtual Simulation Experimental Center for Network Engineering ). In recent 5 years, the College has undertaken 95 national projects with a total research funding of more than 192 million RMB.

The College has an accomplished faculty composed of 105 full-time members, including one academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, one fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, Canadian Academy of Engineering and Engineering Institute of Canada, 24 professors, 32 associate professors and 49 assistant professors. Since its establishment, the College has produced a large number of outstanding computer scientists and software engineers, contributing to society by advancing the fields of computer science and software engineering. Our alumni include Ma Huateng (Pony Ma), the president and founder of Tencent, the most famous IT company in China.
