Founded in 1983, the School of Architecture and Urban Planning (SAUP) evolved from the Department of Architecture, one of the first faculties in Shenzhen University. With the support from the Department of Architecture of Tsinghua University, Professor Wang Tan, student of Frank Lloyd Wright, served as the first dean of SAUP. The first faculty members were outstanding scholars who graduated from top architecture universities in China or those with overseas study experience.
After 37 years of development, SAUP has become a comprehensive institute encompassing four disciplines: architecture, urban and rural planning, landscape architecture, and urban informatics, offering a first-tier discipline doctoral program and a postdoctoral research station in architecture, and a second-tier discipline doctoral program in urban informatics.
Today, SAUP is one of the top architecture schools in overall strength and academic influence in China. SAUP boasts an accomplished faculty including two academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and six specially appointed professors. SAUP’s majors of Architecture and Urban and Rural Planning are selected first-class majors in the Double Ten Thousand Plan by the Ministry of Education, and were assessed “excellent” in the evaluation of undergraduate education. The major of Architecture is a provincial key and famous major and a national feature major. In 2019, our graduate employment and further study rate reached 97.5% and 28.5% respectively.
Rooted in Shenzhen, a pilot demonstration zone for socialism with Chinese characteristics and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area, SAUP will leverage its location and resources and strive to become an international, pioneering, and experimental school of architectural and urban planning.
