Shenzhen University is the first to offer medical education programs in Shenzhen. Approved by the Ministry of Education, the School of Medicine was founded in 2008, offering a clinical medicine program. Zhong Nanshan, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, is the honorary dean of the School.
In 2013, with the medical resources further integrated with Shenzhen University, the Medical School was established, located at the Lihu campus with a total area of 1.7 square kilometers. Professor Wei-Guo Zhu was appointed director and Jinlong Chai, Party Secretary.
The School comprises six schools (School of Basic Medical Sciences, School of Biomedical Engineering, School of Nursing, School of Pharmacy, School of Dentistry and School of Public Health), three centers (Medical Center, Medical Humanistic Center and Carson Cancer Center) and 20 affiliated/teaching hospitals, offering six undergraduate programs, two MSc programs, three professional master programs, PhD program in biomedical engineering (since 2018) and SZU-FSU joint PhD program in biomedical sciences (since 2017). Both clinical medicine and biology&biochemistry are among the top 1% of ESI global ranking. Basic medicine ranks top 29% and biomedical engineering ranks top 25% in China.
Medical School aims to become one of the top medical schools in China to serve the community and nation. The school educates and trains high-quality talents through a comprehensive education that combines extensive theoretical knowledge in the basic medical sciences, clinical medicine, pharmacy, preventive medicine, biomedical engineering and related fields and the development of professional ethics, humanistic qualities and innovative spirit.
Medical School has an enrollment of 2,238 full-time students, including 1,571 undergraduate students, 642 graduate students and 25 international students. The faculty is composed of passionate men and women. There are 521 staff members, of whom 241 are full-time faculty members (58 professors, 6 research fellows, 35 associate professors and 52 associate research fellows) with 95% holding doctorate degrees. Medical Schoolboasts one academician of the American Academy of Medical and Biological Engineering, one foreign academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, one academician of the National Academy of Sciences, one academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and one Nobel laureate.
Members of the Medical School have also excelled in the research arena. Faculty members carried out 1,112 research projects at all levels with total funding of over RMB 1.77 billion from 2018 to 2019, including 471 projects funded by the NSFC. The School's faculty published 1,710 SCI research papers from 2016 to 2019, among which 155 articles (as first and/or corresponding author) are PNAS equivalent or above, and 34 were published in Nature, Science, Cell and their sub-journals.
Medical School actively promotes international cooperation and exchanges. It has established long-term partnerships with renowned medical schools and research institutions in the USA, UK, Germany, Australia, Italy, Netherlands, Russia, Belgium and Kazakhstan.
