In 2006, the College of Materials Science and Engineering (CMSE) was established, whose predecessor was the Department of Materials Science and Engineering founded in 1998.
CMSE is committed to investigating advanced functional materials. We strive for excellence in the research of energy materials, polymer materials, optoelectronic materials and electronic information materials and strive to be a preeminent scientific and technological innovation base in new materials. Our mission is to provide a high-quality education to prepare future materials scientists and engineers with innovative and entrepreneurial spirit, serving the local community and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area
CMSE offers two undergraduate programs in Materials Science and Engineering (a key and first-class discipline of Guangdong Province) and Polymer Materials and Engineering, an academic master’s degree program in Materials Science and Engineering, a professional master’s degree program in Materials and Chemical Engineering, and a second-tier discipline doctoral program in Civil Engineering Functional Materials. CMSE also offers joint training PhD programs with Hong Kong and Macao universities. In 2016, CMSE’s discipline of Materials Science ranked among global top 1% in ESI, and rose to global top 3‰ in ESI in 2020.
Currently, CMSE has 68 full-time academic staff, including one academician from the Canadian Academy of Engineering. The College has an undergraduate enrollment of 481 students and a graduate enrollment of 425 students in 2020. There are 123 post-doctoral researchers and 34 full-time researchers. In recent years, over 30% of our undergraduates have pursued further study. The employment rate of master graduates has reached 100% with 93% employed in fields that are related to their major, significantly contributing to the development of the materials industry in Shenzhen.
CMSE boasts excellent facilities for research, including the Guangdong Functional Materials Interface Engineering Technology Research Center, Guangdong Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center, and three municipal key laboratories (Shenzhen Key Laboratory of Special Functional Materials, Shenzhen Engineering Laboratory for Advanced Technology Ceramics, and Shenzhen Key Laboratory of Polymer Science and Technology). CMSE possesses 200 million RMB worth of large-scale instruments and equipment with a laboratory area close to 20,000 square meters. In the recent five years, CMSE has undertaken 270 scientific research projects, including 52 national projects with a total funding of 180M RMB. CMSE faculty have published more than 1,000 papers in SCI-indexed journals, including more than 300 Q1 category papers according to the Chinese Academy of Sciences ranking and two papers published in Science (AAAS publication) with CMSE as the first affiliation unit.
