The College of Chemistry and Environmental Engineering is a comprehensive science and technology unit. Founded in 2006 by merging the Department of Applied Chemistry established in 1985 and the Department of Chemistry & Biology of Normal School established in 1995. The College offers 4 undergraduate programs in Chemistry, Food Science and Engineering, Environmental Science and Engineering and New Energy Science and Engineering, a first-tier discipline doctoral degree program in Chemistry (Science), a first-tier discipline master’s degree program in Chemistry (Science), a professional master’s program in Chemical Engineering and a professional master’s program in Resources and Environment. At present, the College has an undergraduate enrollment of nearly 900 students and a graduate enrollment of over 500 students.
The College boasts experienced faculty and staff who are engaged in teaching and research. Currently, there are 117 full-time faculty members, including 25 full professors and 37 associate professors. The College aims to attract excellent overseas young scholars/professionals with 67% of the faculty having work or study abroad experience. The College has also appointed nine renowned scientists at home and abroad as visiting professors including Academician Wu Qi (Chinese Academy of Sciences), Academician Wang Guangqian (Chinese Academy of Sciences) and Academician Sun Xueliang (the Royal Academy of Sciences and Engineering of Canada).
In the past five years, the College has undertaken 376 projects, including 116 national projects with a total funding of 272 million CNY. Our faculty members have published 6 monographs and more than 1000 papers in top journals like Journal of the American Chemical Society, Angewandte Chemie International Edition and Advanced Materials. The College has won two provincial science and technology awards and one provincial teaching achievement award. In 2018, our chemistry discipline ranked among the top 1% of ESI global ranking.
The College provides students with a distinctive training system, preparing them for the world of work and achieving an average graduate employment rate of 95% in recent years. Our graduates are highly employable in the labor market. Outstanding alumni include Chen Yidan, main co-founder of Tencent, Xiao Yang, President of Zhuhai Feiyang Chemicals Co., Ltd. and Xie Yanxiong, President of the Sunshine Ink.
