Shenzhen University troupe presents Landscape Painting on the Far Shore at the Avignon Festival and wins an award

July 20, 2026

The Stellar Experimental Troupe of the Division of Arts, Shenzhen University staged its production Landscape Painting on the Far Shore at the Avignon Festival in France during July 4–9, 2026. The troupe gave six consecutive performances at the Theatre of the Angels in the Historic Centre of Avignon and was honored with the title of "Honorary Troupe for Young Pioneer Creation" by the Association Française des Échanges Théâtraux Euro-Asiatiques (AFETEA).

This year marked the festival's 80th anniversary. The 14-member troupe was led by director Hu Yaguang and producer Zhang Yang. The play was performed in Chinese with French and English subtitles. Prior to the performances, the team took part in the Avignon Festival street parade on July 3.

French composer Florian Doidy and French playwright and director of Théâtre de l'Entrepôt Gilles A. Robič watched the show and shared their comments. Doidy said the play displayed "a brand-new artistic vibe" and "poetic expression." Robič remarked that the performers' physical acting and stage delivery lent the work "an extremely rare visual impact."

During the visit, the troupe held discussions with the theatre department at Avignon University on topics including theatre teaching models and the cultivation of young creators, and held talks with local art foundations in Avignon.

The production toured Italy and the United Kingdom back in 2025. It was staged at events such as the Verona Shakespeare Festival in Italy and the Edinburgh Art Festival in the United Kingdom, and won the Outstanding Young Performance Award from the British Asian Theatre Alliance.
