Outstanding international student Yana: an exceptionally vibrant study abroad

Since its establishment in August 2011, the Shenzhen Universiade International Scholarship Foundation (SUISF) has prioritized fostering global youth exchanges through cultural and educational initiatives. To date, SUISF has provided scholarships to 1,308 students, including 868 Chinese students pursuing overseas studies and 440 international students in China, representing 48 countries and regions. In Shenzhen, these students immerse themselves in China's cultural legacy while driving the integration and symbiosis of diverse cultures, serving as a dynamic bridge connecting China with the global community.

In 2024, SUISF allocated a historic CNY7.152 million in funding, supporting 153 degree-seeking students, 30 Chinese language learners, and 8 international exchange initiatives. Among these, the "Summer in Liyuan" Camp program by SZU's College of International Exchange helped 40 teenagers from 9 countries connect through sports, intangible cultural heritage experiences, and cultural tours, fostering cross-cultural dialogue.

This article highlights Yana, a Russian exchange student, who embodies the spirit of this international talent development system. Having moved to Shenzhen with her father in 2004, Yana grew up alongside the "Green City." The city's openness and international atmosphere helped her truly understand the inclusive spirit of "Once you come to Shenzhen, you are a local."

As a trilingual student at the College of Management, she volunteered at the 2024 summer camp as a translator, organizing multilingual icebreakers and culinary exchange sessions to bridge cultural gaps.

This "China expert" has developed a strong appreciation for Chinese cuisine, with dishes like Peking duck and red braised pork belly now serving as emotional comfort when she returns home. Yana is also deeply attracted to China's tea culture, calligraphy, and traditional festivals. She particularly enjoys the warmth of family reunions during the Spring Festival, which has allowed her to appreciate the unique allure of Chinese culture.

In addition to effectively managing her time and focusing on her studies, Yana actively participates in various activities, constantly challenging herself. Her travel experiences in Japan, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka have further enriched her vibrant multicultural life. Thanks to her excellent academic performance and cross-cultural involvement, she successfully received the foundation's 2024 funding. After graduation, Yana aims to start her own business to help international friends better integrate into Shenzhen.

"I hope to promote greater exchanges and cooperation between Shenzhen and the world, and contribute my energy to this dynamic city," said Yana.

Lu Lin, Secretary-General of SUISF, stated that the foundation will further advance its "Education Support, Dream Building" initiative, systematically cultivating globally minded innovators to bolster Shenzhen’s vision as a global innovation hub.
