On May 30, 2024, Miguel Mejía, the Minister of Policies for Regional Integration of the Dominican Republic, along with his delegation, paid a visit to Shenzhen University and delivered a speech at the Lecture Hall of Huixing Building. Zhang Xueji, the Vice President of Shenzhen University, met with the Dominican delegation to share ideas on enhancing academic exchanges and expanding cooperation in education, culture, and other areas.


Mejía delivered a speech titled "Del Caribe a los Antípodas (From the Caribbean to the Antipodes)", which was attended by over a hundred faculty members and students from various departments in the university. Starting with his new book of the same title and based on his personal experiences and insights into the global landscape, he shared a fresh perspective on the development patterns and directions of the international community. He reviewed the development history of Latin America, the milestones of the China-Dominica relationship, as well as the positive momentum and promising future for the bilateral relationship since the establishment of the diplomatic tie between both countries. He also mentioned the significant role that Shenzhen has played as a pioneer and showcase of China's Reform and Opening-up Policies in the Chinese economy. The Shenzhen model, along with the Chinese model, serves as an important reference for the global development of the Dominican Republic. He expressed his expectations to further the cooperations and exchanges with China in areas such as education, culture, and technology in a bid to better benefit the people of both countries.

Zhang Xueji expressed his delight at Minister Miguel Mejía's visit to Shenzhen University to share insights with students. This not only recognizes the university's efforts in globalization, but also greatly supports collaborations in the humanities and social sciences on an international level. He expressed cordial appreciation for Minister Miguel Mejía's efforts in expanding diplomatic relations between both countries, and hoped that those exchange activities led by the Minister would deepen the friendship while opening up a new chapter of cooperation.

Briunny Garabito Segura, the Ambassador of the Dominican Republic to China, said Shenzhen University is one of the fastest-growing universities in the Chinese Mainland, which has nurtured a diverse range of innovative and entrepreneurial talents and made remarkable contributions to the city's development and China's modernization efforts. He expressed expectations to build more connections between Dominican colleges and Shenzhen University and promote the exchanges and learning between scholars and students from both universities, thus jointly promoting sustainable development worldwide.

The event also accommodated the release ceremony of the book From the Caribbean to the Antipodes, where Mejía, Segura, Zhang Xueji, and Cai Yifan from Huaweiattended the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
During the on-site exchange session, Mejía engaged in extensive discussions with faculty members and students from Shenzhen University on a line of topics such as the China-Dominica relationship, the international landscape, and the role of young students in international exchange and cooperation.
