He Daokuan, a renowned translator andprofessor at Shenzhen University (SZU), received a Lifetime Achievement Award in Translation from Translators Association of China (TAC) Monday in Beijing, the first Guangdong-basedscholarto win the honor.
Bornin 1942, He once taught at Sichuan International Studies University and SZU. He is currently an honorary member of the council of the Communication Association of China.Havingbeen engaged in cultural study and academic translation for over 40 years, the professor wasnamedas Outstanding Scholar and Excellent Teacher byChina Journalism and Communication Yearbook.
From the 1980s, He has devoted himself in translating renowned academic works in humanities and social sciences. He has published 110 translated works with more than 25 million words, coveringmultiple subjects in literature, history and philosophy studies.
Though over 80 years old, the assiduoustranslatoris still hale and hearty. “Before 2023, the award winners were those who worked at the government and those who are technical or literary translators. Iamhonoredtoreceive the award for my efforts in academic translation,” said He to the reporter, “academic translation is more than difficult, but I enjoyed it quite much.”
Lifetime Achievement Award in Translation, the highest award for Chinese translators, was set by TAC in 2006, aiming to honor those who havemade outstanding contributions in the field translation. As of 2023, 38 renownedtranslators including Ji Xianlin, Xu Yuanchong and Yang Xianyi have received the honor.
