On the afternoon of January 2, the Shenzhen University 2018 Scholarship Award Ceremony was held in the International Conference Hall. Vice President Wang Hui, Department of Public Relations of the CPC Shenzhen University Party Committee, School League Committee, Department of Student Affairs, Department of Social Science, Department of Science and Technology, Department of International Exchange and Cooperation, Xili Campus Management Office, Department of Laboratory and State-owned Asset Management, departmental heads, faculty members and student representatives from each college attended the ceremony.
At the beginning of the ceremony, the national anthem was sung. Chen Yunfei, associate director of the Department of Student Affairs, introduced the system of scholarship awards at Shenzhen University. This year is the second year of the implementation of the new scholarship system. According to the new system, in addition to awarding students who are outstanding in one particular aspect, two new comprehensive scholarships were given this year, “Star of Liyuan” and “Star of Excellence of Liyuan”, which are awarded on the basis of academic merit, innovation and entrepreneurial achievement, and community service. The two new scholarship awards highlight comprehensive developments of students. In 2018, there were 10,462 students who applied for scholarships online, and 28% of the applicants were successful. There were 5,841 students who received scholarships from Shenzhen University, 125 students who received outside scholarships, and 165 classes which received “Outstanding Class” awards from Shenzhen University. A total of 14.61652 million yuan was awarded. In 2018, the University achieved milestones in education, with the quality of undergraduate education steadily improved. The University now ranks fourth among universities in Guangdong in terms of freshman admission test scores.
Ma Wenze, associate director of the Department of Student Affairs, announced “Decisions regarding 2017-2018 Shenzhen University Scholarships”, “Decisions regarding 2017-2018 Shenzhen University” ‘Top-notch Innovation Program’ Scholarships”, “List of students awarded the 2017-2018 National Scholarship”, and “Decisions regarding Excellence in supporting 2017-2018 Scholarship Applications”.
Departmental heads of Shenzhen University presented“Outstanding Class” awards,Shenzhen University Scholarships, Shenzhen University ‘Top-notch Innovation Program’ Scholarships, National Scholarships, and“Star of Liyuan” awards.Vice President Wang Hui presented“Star of Excellence of Liyuan” awards, including ten nominators and five winners of the award. “Star of Excellence of Liyuan” awards are Shenzhen University’s highest student merit awards.Winners of this award included Huang Nana and Zhang Shuxin from the Health Science Center, Xu Muzi from theCollege of Materials Science and Engineering, Lan Fengbo from theCollege of Information Engineering, and Zheng Yanling from theSchool of Humanities. The five winners showed their achievements via videos and delivered their award speeches. Lastly, vice President Wang Hui presented the “Excellence in supporting 2017-2018 Scholarship Applications” awards to the award winning departments.
Wang Hui congratulated the award-winning students and expressed gratitude and respect to supervisors and mentors of the award-winning students. The year 2018 marks the 40th anniversary of China’s reform and opening up and the 35th anniversary of the founding of Shenzhen University, he said. In the past 35 years, Shenzhen University has made great progress and has become one of the world’s fastest-growing universities. Especially in recent years, Shenzhen University has made remarkable achievements. On one hand, the University has significantly improved its academic “hard power”. Shenzhen University has become one of the “high-level universities in Guangdong Province” with outstanding achievements in teaching and research. The University ranks first among universities in China in terms of the number of PCT patent applications made by faculty members. In addition, the University has established a total of seven new doctoral degree programs.
On the other, the University’s academic “soft power” has also grown significantly. Shenzhen University has been promoting a healthy campus culture which highlights the pursuit of excellence and integrity. comprehensively strengthened party building and created an excellent school spirit that is clean and healthy. In 2018, the University continued to fully implement the “Shenzhen University Cultural Innovation Development Outline”, to build SZU into a “University with a Soul” and a national and city model in terms of cultural self-awareness and cultural self-confidence. Wang Hui encouraged students tocontinue to adhere to the university motto of “self-reliance, self-discipline, self-improvement”, to demonstrate the SZU spirit of “down-to-earth, self-improvement”, to make full use of the ample learning opportunities provided by the University in their pursuit of personal development, and most importantly, to connect their own dreams to the development of the society and the fate of the people.
