On the afternoon of March 26, the opening ceremony of the Marshall Biomedical Engineering Laboratory of Shenzhen University was held in the lecture hall of Shenzhen University Library. The following leaders attended the ceremony: Wang Lixin, deputy mayor of the Shenzhen Municipal Government; Professor Barry Marshall, winner of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2005; Deng Xiaojun, vice director of the Shenzhen Science and Technology Innovation Committee; Xu Jianling, vice director of the Shenzhen Education Bureau; Liu Hongyi, party secretary of the CPC Shenzhen University Committee; Fan Zhigang, vice party secretary; Li Qingquan, president of Shenzhen University; Zhang Xueji, vice president of Shenzhen University; Wang Jingdong, secretary of the Party Working Committee of Dapeng District; Liu Feng, vice director of the Management Committee of Dapeng District; and the heads of other relevant departments. The ceremony was presided over by Zhang Xueji.

Li Qingquan said in his speech that the establishment of the Marshall Biomedical Engineering Laboratory will not only exert a positive impact on the development of Shenzhen University in life sciences, medicine and other related fields, but will also promote the research excellence of Shenzhen University and the transformation of research findings into clinical practice. Li Qingquan said that this was the first laboratory of Shenzhen University that worked with a Nobel Prize-winner, and that it was also the only laboratory in Shenzhen that combined learning, research and industry under the supervision of a Nobel Prize-winner. He believed that as Shenzhen University began its second phase of construction of a high-level university, it would attract more outstanding scientists, obtain more important scientific research results, and thereby make more contributions to innovation and development in Shenzhen.

Liu Feng delivered a speech on behalf of Dapeng District. He said that the district would provide a good environment for achieving biological research results, making the district a spearhead of innovation and entrepreneurship in the biological industry.

In his speech, Professor Marshall expressed his heartfelt thanks to the Shenzhen Municipal Government and Shenzhen University for their support in the preparation of the Laboratory. He expressed high expectations of the Laboratory. Professor Marshall used data to show the status of gastrointestinal cancer in China and the research advantages Shenzhen could offer. He introduced the research plan and members of the Laboratory, and proposed four research goals: to promote cutting-edge scientific research, to improve the diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal cancer, to cultivate high-end talents in biomedicine, and to facilitate the progress of the biomedical industry. He said that Shenzhen’s emphasis on and support for scientific and technological innovation impressed him. He hoped that through the cooperation with Shenzhen University, the Laboratory could foster a perfect combination of clinical and scientific research and help Shenzhen become one of the world’s leading centers for biomedical research and industry.

At the end of the ceremony, the guests unveiled the Marshall Biomedical Engineering Laboratory of Shenzhen University to a warm applause.

After the ceremony, Professor Marshall gave a lecture to the students on the theme of “Creative Innovation - The Birth and Cooperation Opportunity of Nobel Prize Winners”.
The Marshall Biomedical Engineering Laboratory of Shenzhen University is the eighth Nobel Prize-winning Laboratory in Shenzhen. Through this major scientific research platform, Shenzhen University will be committed to establishing a world-class scientific research platform that integrates biology, medicine, engineering and other disciplines, attract high-end innovative talents, carry out major fundamental research around the clinical needs of digestive tract diseases, and strive for the major original innovation cluster breakthrough of basic theory, and to develop the core technology for accurate and efficient diagnosis and treatment of digestive tract diseases, as well as the implementation of transformation in Dapeng District, promoting the development of the medical and health industry in Shenzhen and in China.
