On the morning of May 24th, SZU signed a cooperation agreement with the A. P. Ershov Institute of Information Systems, the Sobolev Institute of Mathematics of Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), and the Novosibirsk State University (NSU) in conference room 201, and held the opening ceremony of workstation of academician Sergei Goncharov from RAS. The following leaders attended the event: Li Qingquan, President of SZU; Xu Chen, Vice President of SZU; Mikhail Fedoruk, President of NSU; Sergei Gancharov, Academician of RAS and Director of the Sobolev Institute of Mathematics of Siberian Branch of RAS; Andrew Palyanov, Academician of RAS and Director of the A. P. Ershov Institute of Information Systems of Siberian Branch of RAS; Victor Selivanov, Chief Scientist; Farid Ablaev, Head of the Department of Statistics and Computational Mathematics of Kazan Federal University. Huang Zhexue, Distinguished Professor of the College of Computer Science & Software Engineering of SZU and Director of the Institute of Big Data Technology and Applications, chaired the meeting.
Li Qingquan first introduced the history of SZU to the participants. He said that in the beginning when the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone (SEZ) was founded in the 1980s, it was in desperate need of all kinds of experts and professionals. The SEZ people had far-sighted visions and proposed to “establish a university of their own” and Shenzhen University came into being. The Central Government, the Ministry of Education and the local government attached great importance to the construction of the University, which was assisted by renowned universities, and attracted many eminent scholars. Since its establishment, SZU has trained a group of outstanding graduates who are active in all walks of life and have contributed to urban development. SZU has developed in line with the SEZ, and is determined to reform and achieve rapid development. It adheres to the school motto “Self-reliance, Self-discipline, Self-strengthening”, which represents the characteristics of “SEZ University, University with a Vision, Experimental University." It offers comprehensive academic and professional training, from BA and MA to PhD, and multi-level scientific research and social service systems.
Xu Chen asked the delegation from RAS about the status of awarding degrees, and he held in-depth discussions on the possible cooperation between the two universities to set up a double degree program in the future. He said that the further cooperation between the two universities will promote the exchange of students and broaden the horizons of students and their choice of program.
The Workstation of Academician Goncharov led by Academician Sergey Goncharov, a chief scientist, relies on the Institute of Big Data Technology and Application of College of Computer Science & Software Engineering of SZU, and the National Engineering Laboratory of Big Data System Computing Technology. It cooperates with Goncharov’s team and NSU, to create a high-level scientific and technological innovation platform for interdisciplinary research in mathematics, big data and artificial intelligence. It makes full use of scientific research findings and rich research experience of Goncharov’s team in the fields of mathematics, statistics and computational theory, carries out innovative research and technical research around basic theories and core technologies on big data system computing, intelligence analysis and artificial intelligence applications. It strives to achieve original international scientific research results and independent innovation of international cutting-edge technology, publish academic papers in top journals such as Nature and Science, promote the development of international leading big data technology, cultivate a new type of big data innovative R&D talents, enhance the big data independent innovation ability of SZU, and raise the quality of SZU's research in this field to domestic top and international advanced levels.
The signing of the cooperation agreement marks a new beginning for the cooperation between Shenzhen University and top universities and research institutions in Russia. After the signing of the agreement, the four sides will establish a Sino-Russian International Joint Research Center at SZU to conduct collaborative research in the fields of mathematics, statistics, data science and artificial intelligence, focusing on mathematical and statistical issues in the fields of data science and artificial intelligence. It aims to make major breakthroughs in basic research in mathematical theory and statistical principles of artificial intelligence, statistical problems in data science and computational issues, and it aims to lay the theoretical foundation for original technological innovation. The Joint Research Center strives to pass the accreditation of the national-level international joint research center within three to five years.
