THE Emerging Economies University Rankings 2020: SZU ranks 27th among universities in Chinese mainland and 84th globally

Times Higher Education (THE) released its Emerging Economies University Rankings 2019 on Feb 19, with 533 institutions from 47 countries and regions on the list, including 81 from the Chinese mainland. Shenzhen university ranks 27th among universities of the Chinese mainland, up five places from 2019, and 84th globally, up 18 places from 2019.

In the latest ranking of universities in Chinese mainland, Shenzhen University rose from 32nd place last year to 27th with its extraordinary performance in teaching, research, citation, internationalization and knowledge transfer. First, in discipline construction, Physics became the 7th discipline listed in the world's top 1% of ESI (Essential Science Indicators) and Optoelectronic Engineering ranks 2nd in China according to the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2019 released by Shanghai Ranking. Second, Shenzhen University shows growing strength in scientific research with 367 NSFC-backed (National Natural Science Foundation of China) projects, ranking 16th in China, 2nd in Guangdong Province, 1st in local universities and 1st in none "Double First-Class" universities, and 75 Chinese Postdoctoral Science Foundation-approved projects, ranking 8th in China. Third, The academic influence of Shenzhen University has been further strengthened with 3791 papers included in SCI, among which 677 in Top Journals, 4 high-quality papers published in the Nature and the Science with SZU as the first author or corresponding author unit, and 4 professors selected into the list of "Global Highly cited Scientists" published by Clarivate Analytics. Fourth, Shenzhen University has accelerated the pace of internationalization and actively promoted the internationalization of talent training, scientific research cooperation, faculty construction, and cultural exchange. Now it has linked with 289 overseas universities and carried out various forms of international cooperation such as student exchange, teacher training, and cooperative education, which has comprehensively improved the quality and level of international exchanges of SZU. Last, SZU has done a lot of effective and fruitful work in the Industry-University Research Collaboration and reached a new high in the number of international PCT patent applications, ranked No. 1 among Chinese universities for three consecutive years and listed as the top 3 of global institutions for the first time. SZU has built various platforms for high-level scientific innovation and Industry-University Research Collaboration, linking closer with the government and high-tech enterprises and performing better in technology transfer.

The Times Higher Education Emerging Economies University Rankings, released annually since 2014, compares institutions in countries and regions classified by the FTSE as “advanced emerging”, “secondary emerging” or “frontier”. The rankings use 13 performance indicators to judge institutions on their teaching (academic environment) (30%), research (output, revenue and reputation) (30%), paper citation (research impact) (20%), internationalization (faculty, students and research) (10%), and industry revenue ( knowledge transfer) (10%).
