On April 7, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) announced the results of the international patent applications in 2019 on its official website. As the largest world leader in international patent filings of the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) through WIPO, it is the first time that China has overtaken the United States. Among the global educational institutions applying for PCT, Shenzhen University (SZU) has harvested substantial fruits. With 247 PCT applications, SZU continues to rank third in the world, after the University of California in first place and Tsinghua University (THU) in second place.

Among the top 50 global educational institutions applying for PCT, there are 14 Chinese universities, of which THU ranks first with 265 and SZU ranks second with 247. In 2018, the number of PCT applications of SZU was 228, with open no less than 201 PCT open applications, ranking the third in the world and the first in China.
SZU launched the standardization management of intellectual property management in 2017, improving the scope and science of intellectual property management. In addition, SZU has also set up "the Intellectual Property Cloud Platform", which integrates the whole process, from patent application, fact checking, information query, funding, to operation, greatly reducing the workload of scientific researchers. SZU has continuously deepened the reform of scientific research system, introduced high-level talents with fruitful results, and produced high-quality PCT patents.
Meanwhile, SZU has also revised the scientific research incentives to reward PCT applications for international retrieval reports.
In terms of the transfer and transformation of intellectual property, SZU issued the measures for the transformation of scientific and technological achievements of Shenzhen University in 2010, which has ignited the enthusiasm of researchers in serving the local economic development. At the same time, both SZU and enterprises carry out collaborative innovation to create a series of intellectual property rights to support industrial development.
In recent years, SZU has achieved fruitful results in the Industry-University-Research Collaboration. Prof. Peng Xiang's three-dimensional imaging and modeling technology is in the lead in China. He cooperates with many corporations, including Huawei and Lenovo, achieving an output value of 350 million yuan, which helped ESUN Group to be listed on the market successfully. Prof. Zhang Huisheng's team plays the leader in quantitative analysis of chemiluminescence immunity, which succeeded in assisting SNIBE company in being listed successfully, resulting in an output value of over 100 million yuan. The welding machine technology that controls waveform negative energy feedback of laser power developed by Prof. Niu Qiang’s team has reached the international top level, and the output value has reached 200 million yuan.
