1. General Overview

Shenzhen University was established in 1983 with the approval of the Ministry of National Education. The Central Authorities, the Ministry of Education and local government bodies attach great importance to the construction of this university in SEZ (Special Economic Zone). At present, Shenzhen University is a comprehensive university with all academic disciplines, state-of-the-art facilities, highly qualified teachers and standardized management. In order to fully implement the Innovation-driven Development Strategy and support the construction of an innovative country. Shenzhen University is located in Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, the buffer zone of Reform and Opening Up. The university gives full play to the advantages of local colleges and universities serving the local social economy. Since the 18th CPC National Congress (2012), scientific and technological innovation has actively developed and flourished. In recent years, a major breakthrough has been achieved in terms of scientific and technological innovation, as well as rapidly increased investment in R&D. In the past three years, Shenzhen University has initiated all kinds of science and technology research at all levels with a total number of 2,627 projects, 298 of which were granted funds by the National Natural Science Foundation. These achievements ranked 23rd in the country, 2ndin Guangdong Province. Shenzhen University undertakes more than 100 key scientific research projects on the national level with a cumulative value of 400 million yuan. The total scientific research funds are growing at a rate of 100 million yuan per year and exceeded 1,079 billion yuan in the year of 2018. Five national platforms and 41 provincial and ministerial platforms have been formed. SZU’s faculty and students have won three national prizes for science and technology inventions and have also received other national awards, including 27 provincial and ministerial awards and 22 municipal awards. The number of patent applications and patents issued also achieves a high record. In 2016, SZU ranked 1st among international PCT patent applications among universities nationwide, which is in the top twenty worldwide. In 2017, a record of 1,193 patent applications were filed.

2. Highlights

At Shenzhen University, there are eleven full-time academicians of both Chinese Academy of Sciences and China Academy of Engineering, more than 2000 dedicated teachers and over 1,000 postdoctoral and full-time researchers, which together constitute the young and strong scientific research team of Shenzhen University.

3. Major Achievements

(1) Research Awards: three National Awards, 27 Provincial and Ministerial Awards and 22 Municipal Awards were won during 2013-2018.

•The Second Prize of the 2017 National Technology Invention Award, project “Key Technology of Building Waste Recycled Aggregate and its Large-scale Application”.

•The second prize of the 2015 National Technology Invention Award, project “Key technology and equipment project for dynamic detection of road pavement”.

·The Second Prize of the 2014 National Technology Invention Award, project “Key technology and application project of high-performance active excitation and collaborative modulation of large amount industrial waste residue”.

(2) Research Articles: The total number of high-level papers published in annually increased, with a total of 9,691 articles indexed in SCI from 2013-2018, rising from 559 in 2013 to 2,969 in 2018. The average annual growth rate is more than 40%. The high citation rates of the articles also promote rapidly from 42 in 2015 to 107 in the year of 2017. In 2018, the Academician Team led by Prof. Fan Dianyuan published the latest experimental results in the journalsScienceandNature. During the years of 2013 to 2018, nearly 200 articles were published in journals with an impact factor higher than (or equal to) twenty, including the journalsNatureandScience. SZU ranks 39 among universities in China in terms of Nature index.

3) Scientific research patents: the number of patent applications keeps growing. In 2018, 1041 patent applications were filed. From 2013 to 2018, the accumulated number of patent applications was 4,222 with an annual growth rate of over 50%, among which 1,443 patents were issued. According to the publication of international patent applications by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), SZU filed 87 patents in 2016 and 108 patents in 2017. The data shows that, in terms of PCT Patent Application Publication, SZU ranked 13th and 11th among the educational institutions worldwide in the year of 2016 and the year of 2017, respectively, which ranks the first among local colleges and universities in China for two consecutive years.
